The parquet pattern, cut into a waterproof plank. Real timber herringbone is expensive, needs a specialist to lay it and stays out of wet rooms. This does none of that, and every colour is the same price per square metre.

How herringbone vinyl is installed
We supply the product. Installation is a job for a qualified flooring installer. These are the steps your installer will follow, and the checks worth asking about before the job starts.
Never glue directly to chipboard
Yellow tongue, red tongue and other chipboard style subfloors are made from reconstituted sawdust. Adhesive bonds to those tiny particles, and over time they pull free under stress. Always install a hard overlay, plywood or masonite, before laying vinyl plank flooring. Your installer needs to assess this before any product is ordered.

Assess and prepare the subfloor
Vinyl plank flooring is the most subfloor sensitive category we carry. Any lump, dip or contour underneath will eventually show through the plank. Screed, patch and sand until the slab or overlay is flat.
Check for chipboard or yellow tongue
If your subfloor is chipboard, yellow tongue or any reconstituted sheet, you cannot glue directly to it. The adhesive bonds to the sawdust particles rather than a solid grain, and those particles pull free under stress. Lay plywood or masonite over the chipboard, screw it down well, then glue to that.
Apply hard set adhesive
Glue down with a full hard set adhesive is best practice, full stop. Pressure sensitive adhesives keep the board in position but will not stop doming or dimensional movement as the plank heats and cools. Click together vinyl plank left the market for the same reason: the heat softens the joint. Hard set is the only reliable answer.
Lay the planks and roll
Work in manageable sections. Lay each plank firmly into the wet adhesive, stagger the joints for a natural look, and roll the floor with a flooring roller once a section is down. That gives full contact and eliminates air pockets.
Allow full cure before traffic
Keep the floor clear while the adhesive cures. Check the adhesive manufacturer's guidance for temperature and time, and hold the room at a stable temperature through that period. Vinyl plank flooring is temperature sensitive while the adhesive is setting.
Straight Talk on Herringbone
Herringbone is the look everyone asks for. In vinyl it is finally a floor you can put in a kitchen without thinking twice.
Why herringbone works in vinyl
Traditional timber herringbone is expensive and needs a highly skilled installer. In vinyl you get the same classic parquet look at a fraction of the price, and the 100% waterproof core means you can put it in kitchens, laundries and any wet adjacent area where real timber would be a poor idea.
Plan the pattern before you order
Herringbone eats more material at the perimeter than a straight lay, because every cut at a wall is on the diagonal. Send us the room dimensions and we will work the quantity with the pattern in mind rather than applying a flat waste percentage and hoping.
Herringbone questions, answered
Is herringbone vinyl flooring waterproof?
Yes. Premium Herringbone is 100% waterproof throughout, which makes it suitable for kitchens, laundries and high traffic living areas. The core does not absorb moisture, so a spill will not damage the board if it is wiped up promptly.
Can herringbone vinyl go in a kitchen?
It can. The waterproof core and glue down installation make it a solid kitchen floor, and it handles normal kitchen moisture and cleaning without issue. We supply it across Brisbane and can point you to an installer who works with this format regularly.
How is herringbone vinyl flooring installed?
It is a glue down product, laid with a hard set adhesive. Unlike click together vinyl, which failed in the market because heat softens the joints, glue down is stable and long lasting. Subfloor preparation is critical: the floor must be flat and sound before the adhesive goes down.
Can I lay herringbone vinyl over my existing tiles?
It depends on the condition of the tiles. Vinyl plank flooring eventually conforms to any contour underneath, grout lines included, and those will telegraph through the surface over time. The tiles need to be firmly bonded and in good condition, with the grout lines filled and sanded, before you lay over them. Your installer should assess the subfloor first.
How do I care for herringbone vinyl flooring?
Sweep or vacuum regularly so grit does not scratch the wear layer. Use a damp mop with a pH neutral cleaner and no harsh chemicals. Fit felt pads under chair legs and heavy furniture. In rooms with significant direct sun, use blinds or UV window film to slow any colour change.
Does herringbone need more material than a straight lay?
Yes. Every cut at a wall is on the diagonal, so the perimeter wastes more than a straight lay does. Send us the room dimensions and we will work the quantity with the pattern in mind rather than applying a flat percentage.
